The Acoustic Analogy and Alternative Theories for Jet Noise Prediction

چکیده
This paper describes several methods for the prediction of jet noise. All but one of the noise prediction schemes are based on Lighthill's or Lilley's acoustic analogy while the other is the jet noise generation model recently proposed by Tam and Auriault.1 In all the approaches some assumptions must be made concerning the statistical properties of the turbulent sources. In each case the characteristic scales of the turbulence are obtained from a solution of the Reynolds-averaged Navier Stokes equation using a k turbulence model. It is shown that, for the same level of empiricism, Tam and Auriault's model yields better agreement with experimental noise measurements than the acoustic analogy. It is then shown that this result is not because of some fundamental aw in the acoustic analogy approach: but, is associated with the assumptions made in the approximation of the turbulent source statistics. If consistent assumptions are made, both the acoustic analogy and Tam and Auriault's model yield identical noise predictions. The paper concludes with a proposal for an acoustic analogy that provides a clearer identi cation of the equivalent source mechanisms and a discussion of noise prediction issues that remain to be resolved.

Aerodynamic Noise Computation of the Flow Field around NACA 0012 Airfoil Using Large Eddy Simulation and Acoustic Analogy
The current study presents the results of the aerodynamic noise prediction of the flow field around a NACA 0012 airfoil at a chord-based Reynolds number of 100,000 and at 8.4 degree angle of attack. An incompressible Large Eddy Simulation (LES) turbulence model is applied to obtain the instantaneous turbulent flow field. The noise prediction is performed by the Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings (FW-...

Jets are one of the most fascinating topics in fluid mechanics. For aeronautics, turbulent jet-noise modelling is particularly challenging, not only because of the poor understanding of high Reynolds number turbulence, but also because of the extremely low acoustic efficiency of high-speed jets. Turbulent jet-noise models starting from the classical Lighthill acoustic analogy to state-of-the ar...
متن کاملFlow simulation and aerodynamic noise prediction for a high-speed train wheelset
Aerodynamic noise becomes significant for high-speed trains and its prediction in an industrial context is hard to achieve. The aerodynamic and aeroacoustic behaviour of the flow past a highspeed train wheelset, one of the main components of a bogie, are investigated at a scale 1:10 using a two-stage hybrid method of computational fluid dynamics and acoustic analogy. The near-field unsteady flo...
متن کاملUse of Stochastic Turbulence Models in Jet Acoustics
There are many approaches to determine the sound propagated from turbulent flows. In hybrid methods, the turbulent noise source field is computed or modeled separately from the far-field calculations. To have an initial and quick estimation of the sound propagation, less computationally intensive methods can be developed using stochastic models of the turbulent fluctuations. In this paper, ...
متن کاملReduction of Radiation Efficiency in High-Speed Jets
The Lighthill acoustic analogy indicates that substantial noise reduction is possible in high-speed jets by reducing the radiation efficiency. This entails reducing the convective Mach number of the eddies whose footprint is sensed in the near pressure field. In dualstream jets, local reduction in convective Mach number is possible by inducing asymmetry in the plume that redistributes the most ...
